When shopping for this, it is a good idea to think about when the blanket may be needed. Because the blankets can double as shelters, this is useful for camping or hiking trips. The blankets can protect against wind and rain as well as repel heat in areas where shade is not available. The standard size for most emergency blankets is 84 inches long and 52 inches wide. This is adequate coverage for one person from head to toe. A few manufacturers produce blankets that are a bit bigger and are big enough to cover two people.

If the blanket will be used in remote areas or in a rescue situation, a neon orange color blanket is a good idea. The blanket is lined with orange on one side that makes it easy for rescue crews to identify from the air. If orange is not an option, the reflective silver or gold material the blankets are made with will also aid visibility.

Space Brand emergency blankets are usually around four dollars each, but the quality of this particular brand is better than most other emergency blankets on the market. The material is a bit heavier and sturdier than the cheaper brands. Polarshield makes an emergency blanket that is closer to the two dollar price range without sacrificing quality.

what is the rated warmth of an emergency mylar space or aluminized emergency blanket?

does anyone know what the rated warmth of an emergency blanket Is? for example some Sleeping Bags blankets quilts etc are rated anywhere from 45 degrees to minus 30. I am trying to find out what the coldest conditions would be that an emergency blanket could give warmth and sustain a person

I tried using an emergency blanket on two different occasions while backpacking. When the temperature was above 50f it was fair. When the temp dropped below 50f it was useless. About the only thing you can do with one is wrap it around your shoulders and hold it together tight. Using it in a tent causes terrible condensation. And they never stayed tucked in when trying to sleep with one.
They are great for reflecting heat from the sun though.
